The Emotion Code is one of the more unusual therapies I offer — and also one that produces some of the most significant responses. If you haven’t come across it before, here’s a clear explanation of what it is, what it’s based on, and what actually happens in a session.

The Principle Behind Emotion Code

Emotion Code was developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, a chiropractor and energy medicine practitioner, and set out in his book of the same name. The central premise is this: when the body experiences an overwhelming emotion — whether from a single intense event or from chronic, accumulated experience — that emotion can become “trapped” in the body’s tissues rather than completing its natural arc.

Emotions are meant to arise, be experienced, and then pass. When they can’t complete that cycle — because we’re overwhelmed, because we suppress them, because the circumstances prevent full expression — the emotional energy becomes lodged in a specific area of the body, where it continues to exert an influence on physical health, emotional patterns, and behaviour.

The Emotion Code Chart

Emotion Code works from a chart of sixty emotions organised into six rows and two columns. Using muscle testing (applied kinesiology), I navigate the chart to identify which specific emotion is trapped — working through the rows and columns until the body’s response indicates the exact emotion. I then determine other details: where in the body it’s held, when it originated, and whether it’s the client’s own emotion or inherited (passed down through family lineage, which is a consistent finding in this work).

The Release Process

Once an emotion is identified, it’s released using a technique involving a magnet or the hand moving along the governing meridian — a major energy pathway running down the spine. In the context of energy medicine, this is understood to clear the energetic imprint of the emotion from the body’s field. What clients experience varies: some feel a immediate lightness, warmth, or shift. Others notice changes in the hours, days, or weeks following, as the body integrates the release.

What Emotion Code Is Used For

The applications are broader than many people expect. Physical symptoms — particularly chronic pain, unexplained symptoms, and conditions that haven’t responded to other treatment — often have trapped emotional contributors. Emotional patterns, relationship dynamics, anxiety, phobias, self-sabotage, and the kind of persistent low-level unhappiness that doesn’t have a clear current cause are all areas where Emotion Code can produce significant shifts. I cover the trauma and emotional dimension of this work on the trauma and emotional release page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to share my emotional history for this to work? No — Emotion Code can identify and release trapped emotions without you needing to verbally describe what happened or recall specific events. The body’s own information is the guide.

How many sessions are needed? This varies widely depending on the complexity of the situation. Some clients notice significant shifts within one to three sessions; others work more extensively, particularly when addressing deep or longstanding patterns.

Can I have Emotion Code remotely? Yes — remote sessions are available and work as effectively as in-person sessions for most clients. Get in touch to discuss.
