Anxiety is one of the most common reasons women come to see me, and one of the areas where the gap between what conventional medicine offers and what people actually need is most apparent. Medication has an important role in anxiety management, and I would never discourage anyone from using it when it’s right for them. But many people want options that don’t involve medication — either because they can’t tolerate it, prefer not to use it, or want to address the underlying physiology rather than managing symptoms.

Anxiety as a Nervous System State

Anxiety is fundamentally a nervous system state. The sympathetic nervous system is over-activated — the threat-detection system is running at a level that’s disproportionate to actual current threats. The amygdala is generating alarm signals. Cortisol and adrenaline are elevated. The body is prepared for danger that isn’t there.

This understanding is important because it points directly toward what actually works: approaches that change the nervous system’s operating state, not just cognitive strategies for thinking differently about the anxiety. Thinking your way out of anxiety has limited effectiveness precisely because the anxiety is happening at a physiological level that precedes thought.

Reflexology for Anxiety

Reflexology is one of the most evidence-backed non-pharmaceutical interventions for anxiety. Multiple studies have found significant reductions in anxiety scores with reflexology treatment. In my practice near Wellingborough, it’s the most common condition I see reflexology help most immediately and consistently.

The adrenal and solar plexus reflex points are particularly important for anxiety — the adrenals because cortisol regulation is central to the anxiety picture, and the solar plexus because it’s a direct release point for accumulated nervous tension. Regular sessions rebuild the nervous system’s capacity to regulate itself. More on the reflexology page.

Reiki for Anxiety

For deep, pervasive anxiety that has been present for a long time, Reiki often reaches places that reflexology doesn’t. The energetic work of Reiki addresses the anxiety at a level that feels quite fundamental — clients sometimes describe a shift in the quality of their baseline state, not just temporary relief. Many clients with anxiety find that the kind of complete physiological rest that Reiki produces is something they haven’t experienced in years.

Addressing Root Causes With Emotion Code

Anxiety that has identifiable emotional roots — past trauma, specific fears, accumulated emotional holding — often responds particularly well to Emotion Code. Releasing the trapped emotional energies that are driving the nervous system’s chronic activation can shift the anxiety at a deeper level than symptomatic approaches. I cover this on the trauma and emotional release page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can holistic therapy reduce anxiety? Many clients feel significant relief in the hours following their first session. Sustained change in baseline anxiety typically comes with a course of sessions over several weeks.

Can I use these therapies alongside antidepressants or anxiolytics? Yes — holistic therapy is compatible with any medication. Some clients find that as anxiety reduces with regular therapy, they’re able to discuss reducing medication with their GP.

What about panic attacks? Reflexology and Reiki both reduce the frequency and intensity of panic attacks over a course of treatment, by addressing the underlying nervous system dysregulation that generates them.
