Fibromyalgia is one of those conditions that conventional medicine struggles to explain or treat adequately, and where many clients come to holistic therapy after years of feeling unsupported. Understanding what fibromyalgia actually is — neurologically — makes it much clearer why holistic approaches that work with the nervous system can produce meaningful results.
What Fibromyalgia Actually Is
Fibromyalgia is a condition of central sensitisation. The nervous system has essentially turned up its pain-processing gain — so that normal signals are experienced as painful, and painful signals are experienced as severely painful. The widespread muscle aching, tender points, fatigue, sleep disruption, and cognitive symptoms (“fibro fog”) are all expressions of a nervous system that is chronically over-activated and unable to down-regulate.
This matters enormously for treatment. If fibromyalgia is a nervous system condition, then treating it effectively requires working with the nervous system — not just managing symptoms at the tissue level. This is exactly where holistic therapy has the most to offer.
Reiki for Fibromyalgia
Reiki consistently produces the deepest nervous system down-regulation of any of the therapies I offer. For fibromyalgia clients, this can produce significant pain relief — not because the tissues have changed, but because the nervous system’s pain amplification has temporarily reduced. With regular sessions, many clients find that this reduction becomes more sustained as the system learns to hold a less activated state. Read more on the Reiki page.
Reflexology for Fibromyalgia
Reflexology works the reflex points for the adrenals, nervous system, and pain-regulating pathways to support overall system regulation. It also addresses the specific physical symptoms — muscular tension, sleep disruption, digestive involvement — that accompany fibromyalgia. The gentle but effective nature of reflexology makes it well tolerated even when touch sensitivity is high. More details are on the reflexology page.
Addressing the Emotional Dimension
Fibromyalgia consistently has a significant emotional and trauma dimension. The central sensitisation that characterises it is often rooted in chronic stress, adverse childhood experiences, or unprocessed trauma that has kept the nervous system in a state of chronic activation. Emotion Code and craniosacral therapy both address these underlying patterns. I cover this more on the trauma and emotional release page.
What to Expect When Treating Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia requires a patient, paced approach. The nervous system is highly sensitised, and overworking it in a session can trigger flares. I always work within what your body can handle on the day, and I’ll adapt sessions based on how you’re responding. Recovery tends to be non-linear — expect periods of improvement alongside some fluctuation, particularly in the early stages.
I’m based in Wilby, near Wellingborough, and I see clients with fibromyalgia from across Northamptonshire.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can holistic therapy cure fibromyalgia? Many clients with fibromyalgia experience significant and lasting improvement with consistent holistic therapy, and some reach a point where symptoms are largely resolved. I wouldn’t use the word “cure,” but meaningful recovery is achievable.
Is touch therapy safe for fibromyalgia sufferers who are touch-sensitive? I adapt the pressure and approach to your sensitivity. Reiki, craniosacral therapy, and very gentle reflexology all work with minimal physical pressure.
How often should I come? For fibromyalgia, regular sessions are more important than occasional ones. Weekly or fortnightly to start, moving to monthly maintenance as things improve, tends to produce the best outcomes.
