The question of frequency is one of the most practical things to consider when starting reflexology, and the answer varies quite a bit depending on what you’re hoping to achieve. Here’s a honest guide to frequency based on different situations and goals.
For a Specific Health Condition
If you’re coming to reflexology to address a specific condition — hormonal imbalance, digestive problems, chronic pain, sleep difficulties, anxiety — the approach I usually recommend is:
Initial course: Weekly or fortnightly sessions for four to six weeks. This establishes a new pattern in the body, gives the nervous system and endocrine system repeated input, and produces cumulative change more efficiently than monthly sessions spaced too far apart.
Maintenance phase: Once meaningful improvement has been established, moving to monthly sessions sustains those improvements. For some conditions — particularly hormonal ones — monthly is actually the ideal ongoing frequency as it aligns with the natural hormonal cycle.
This is covered in more detail on the reflexology page.
For General Wellbeing and Stress Management
For clients who are essentially well but want to maintain that wellness, manage ongoing stress, and support their body’s resilience over time, monthly is a natural rhythm. Coming monthly means you arrive before things have had time to significantly build up, and each session can focus on refining and maintaining rather than recovering from accumulated stress.
During Periods of High Demand
Life isn’t uniform in its demands. During periods of particularly high stress — a difficult work period, a family crisis, health challenges, significant life transitions — more frequent support may be warranted. Some clients come weekly during these periods and then return to monthly once things settle. There’s no need to stick rigidly to one frequency if circumstances call for more support.
During Pregnancy and Perimenopause
Both pregnancy and perimenopause involve periods of significant hormonal change where more frequent sessions may be more valuable. Fortnightly sessions during perimenopause, particularly when symptoms are active, often produces better results than monthly. I discuss the specific approach for these situations on the hormonal health page.
As a Standalone Relaxation Treatment
If you’re coming purely for relaxation with no specific health concern — the way some people have a regular massage — then whatever rhythm works for you and fits your budget is the right frequency. Monthly is a common sweet spot; some clients come fortnightly as an ongoing restorative practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I come too often? In general, no — reflexology doesn’t have a risk of overtreatment in the way some more interventionist therapies might. Weekly sessions are fine for most people.
What if I can only come occasionally? Occasional sessions still produce benefit, though the cumulative change that comes from regular sessions won’t develop in the same way. Any session is better than none. Package options may help with planning.
How will I know when to increase or decrease frequency? I’ll give you honest guidance based on how you’re responding. If things are improving consistently, we may suggest reducing frequency; if there’s a plateau or a challenge, we might recommend more sessions close together.
