Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common reasons women come to see me, and reflexology is one of the most consistently effective tools I use to support it. The connection between foot reflexology and the endocrine system isn’t intuitive until you understand how the reflex map works — but once you do, it makes a great deal of sense.

The Endocrine Reflex Points

Reflexology is based on the principle that every organ, gland, and system in the body has a corresponding reflex point on the feet. The endocrine glands — the pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and uterus — all have well-mapped reflex points that are directly accessible during a session.

When I work these points, I’m not directly manipulating the glands. What I’m doing is sending a signal through the nervous system that encourages those glands to regulate their function more effectively. Think of it as a recalibration prompt — the body receives the input and responds by rebalancing the output of the glands in question.

The Pituitary — The Master Gland

The pituitary gland is the control centre of the hormonal system. It produces hormones that regulate the thyroid, adrenals, and ovaries. When the pituitary is under stress or its function is disrupted — which chronic stress causes — the knock-on effects cascade through the entire endocrine system.

The pituitary reflex point sits at the centre of the big toe, and it’s one I spend meaningful time on during sessions focused on hormonal health. Supporting pituitary function through reflexology helps the whole hormonal cascade work more coherently.

The Adrenal Connection

Cortisol — the stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands — is one of the most disruptive forces in the female hormonal system. Elevated cortisol suppresses progesterone production, disrupts the thyroid, affects blood sugar, and interferes with sleep. Most hormonal imbalance has an adrenal component.

Reflexology directly supports adrenal function. By activating the parasympathetic nervous system and working the adrenal reflex points, sessions help lower cortisol levels and reduce the adrenal overactivation that drives so much hormonal disruption. This is why many clients notice improvements in sleep, energy, and mood alongside the more specific hormonal benefits.

Specific Conditions Where Reflexology Helps

In my Wellingborough practice I regularly see women with PMS, irregular cycles, PCOS, perimenopausal symptoms, thyroid issues, and the hormonal disruption that accompanies chronic stress. Reflexology supports all of these — not by treating them as isolated conditions, but by improving the overall regulatory capacity of the endocrine system. I go into more detail on the digestive and hormonal health page.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

For acute symptoms, some clients notice a shift after even one session. For ongoing hormonal imbalance, a course of four to six sessions over six to eight weeks tends to produce the most significant recalibration — followed by monthly maintenance to sustain the improvements. The body needs repetition to hold a new pattern.

What This Looks Like in a Session

Sessions last an hour. We begin with a conversation about what you’re experiencing — so the treatment is targeted to your specific hormonal picture rather than following a generic protocol. The reflexology page has full details of what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can reflexology help with perimenopause? Yes — it’s one of its most consistent applications. Hot flushes, mood swings, sleep disruption, and irregular cycles all respond well.

How does reflexology compare to hormone therapy? They work through completely different mechanisms and aren’t directly comparable. Many women use reflexology alongside hormone therapy, or as an alternative when HRT isn’t appropriate for them.

Is it safe during the luteal phase or during my period? Generally yes, though I always check with clients about where they are in their cycle so I can adapt the session appropriately.
